The Geoscience Society emphasized the importance of preserving biodiversity by promoting environmental awareness..

The Kuwait Geoscience Society emphasized on Wednesday the crucial need to preserve biodiversity by promoting environmental awareness, encouraging community participation, and integrating environmental sustainability concepts into educational curricula.

Speaking to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on the occasion of International Day for Biological Diversity (observed annually on May 22), Society President Dr. Mubarak Al-Hajri stated: "This year's celebration under the theme 'Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development' reflects the urgent need to protect ecosystems and biodiversity for a sustainable future."

Dr. Al-Hajri added: "Kuwait's marine environment hosts diverse species of fish, turtles, and coral reefs, while its terrestrial areas contain desert plants and animals adapted to harsh environmental conditions." He emphasized these ecosystems' critical role in maintaining ecological balance and providing natural resources.

The president particularly stressed the importance of preserving coral reefs in Kuwaiti islands, noting their vital function in maintaining marine ecosystem health and balance. "Their value extends beyond aesthetics to include biodiversity support and coastal protection," he explained.

Despite its small size and harsh desert climate, Kuwait boasts unique biodiversity encompassing terrestrial and marine ecosystems, including those in Kuwait Bay, salt marshes, islands, and desert areas, Dr. Al-Hajri noted.

He praised official authorities' efforts in addressing environmental challenges, highlighting that Kuwait - through the Environment Public Authority - implemented a National Biodiversity Strategy (2011-2020) to protect endangered species and establish natural reserves. The country has also issued regulations to control wildlife hunting and protect natural habitats.

The United Nations General Assembly designated May 22 as International Day for Biological Diversity to raise awareness about biodiversity's importance and related challenges, commemorating the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity text on May 22, 1992.
