The European Union confirmed on Wednesday its plans to provide Tunisia with additional funding during the 2025-2027 period.
In an interview with the Tunisian News Agency (TAP), EU Ambassador to Tunisia Giuseppe Perrone revealed that the bloc – which has provided nearly €1.8 billion in funding since 2013 – intends to maintain this support.
Perrone outlined these figures while discussing direct budget support and future financing lines the EU will establish for Tunisia, particularly given the protectionist policies affecting export sectors.
Key Financial Details:
Historic Support: "The EU remains Tunisia's largest donor since 2013, having provided €1.1 billion in direct budget support," Perrone stated
Future Plans: Brussels plans further assistance through loans, direct budget support, and grants to help implement necessary reforms
Innovative Financing: New financial instruments will fund infrastructure projects identified by Tunisian authorities
European Team Approach: Cooperation with member states under "Team Europe" initiatives, particularly in water and investment sectors
Economic Context:
The ambassador noted Tunisia's reform efforts and EU readiness to support them, acknowledging current challenges:
"We're in a sensitive period with tariff wars and rising protectionism risks"
"Tunisia needs enhanced cooperation with major partners in this interconnected world"
Growth Potential:
Perrone highlighted Tunisia's advantages:
Exceptional human resources and talented, ambitious youth
Stronger economic integration with Europe boosts Tunisia's economy
"We need a prosperous, strong Tunisia that remains open to the EU"
