The White House announced on Monday that U.S. President's Middle East Envoy Steve Witkopf will travel to Qatar this week to participate in negotiations for a potential ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
White House Press Secretary Caroline Lafitte stated during a press briefing: "Special Envoy Witkopf is scheduled to travel to Doha later this week to participate in the discussions."
Lafitte emphasized that President Donald Trump's current top priority in the Middle East is "ending the war in Gaza and securing the release of all detainees," noting that Hamas had recently received a "reasonable" ceasefire proposal for Gaza.
She praised Qatar and Egypt for their mediating roles in these negotiations to "bring peace to the region and definitively end the conflict."
Last week, President Trump hinted at an imminent ceasefire in Gaza during press remarks at the White House, stating: "I believe that within the next week, we will reach a ceasefire."
President Trump is also scheduled to meet today with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, where the two leaders will discuss the progress of negotiations with Hamas and potential agreements for prisoner releases.
