Research Institute: Successful Local Production and Marketing of Farmed Shrimp for Fourth Consecutive Year Boosts Food Security..

Under the patronage of Acting Director General Dr. Faisal Al-Hamidan, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) hosted its annual "Shrimp Harvest" event today, marking four successful years of pioneering locally farmed shrimp production using advanced technologies to support national food security and aquaculture development – a strategic pillar of Kuwait Vision 2035.

Key Achievements:

  • Commercial Milestone: First-ever local market entry of Kuwaiti-farmed shrimp

  • Record Yield: Exceeded 2kg/m² production density with market-size shrimp (20g)

  • Tech Innovation: Successful implementation of eco-friendly biofloc technology (zero antibiotics/chemicals)

  • Resource Adaptation: Breakthrough in using Kuwait's challenging low-salinity groundwater

Dr. Sheireen Al-Sebaiei, Lead Researcher of the Sustainable Shrimp Farming Project, stated: *"This isn't just aquaculture – it's a scientific revolution tailored to Kuwait's harsh environment. Our closed-loop system recycles 100% of water while producing premium shrimp."*

Strategic Impact:

✅ Import Reduction: Targets 70% shrimp import dependency
✅ Private Sector Catalyst: Blueprint for commercial-scale operations
✅ Job Creation: New opportunities for national workforce

Future Vision:

KISR has proposed a 100,000m² Fisheries Economic Zone in Bar Ghudhi under Kuwait's Government Initiatives Program, with projected annual outputs of:

  • 1,200 tons of premium seafood (shrimp, hamour, sobaity, sheri)

  • Local feed production and fish processing facilities

"This transforms Kuwait from consumer to producer in aquaculture," Dr. Al-Sebaiei emphasized, noting the project's alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals.
