Syrian President: Events in Suwayda Marked a Dangerous Turning Point and Nearly Spun Out of Control..

Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara stated on Saturday that the recent events in Suwayda province marked a "dangerous turning point," noting that violent clashes between armed groups had nearly spiraled out of control before state intervention restored calm.

In a televised address, al-Shara warned that while Syrian authorities managed to stabilize the situation, "Israeli occupation forces pushed the country toward a perilous phase by blatantly bombing southern regions and government institutions in Damascus, threatening national stability."

He revealed that American and Arab mediators had subsequently stepped in to broker de-escalation efforts.

Escalation and Tribal Tensions
The President explained that after state forces withdrew from certain areas, armed factions in Suwayda launched retaliatory attacks against Bedouin communities. These assaults, accompanied by human rights violations, prompted other tribes to mobilize and break the siege on Bedouins within Suwayda.

Al-Shara emphasized that while the state had supported Suwayda post-liberation, "some have exploited the city’s role in national stability for malicious ends." He condemned attempts by "internal actors to weaponize Suwayda in international conflicts," stressing that such moves only deepen Syria’s crisis.

Sovereignty and Unity
"The Syrian state alone can safeguard its sovereignty across every inch of territory," al-Shara asserted, urging citizens to "unite fully during this critical juncture to preserve our nation."

He notably praised the U.S. for "standing with Syria in these difficult circumstances," alongside the EU, Russia, and China for their "firm rejection of Israeli aggression and repeated violations of Syrian sovereignty."

Defending National Cohesion
The President cautioned against blaming the entire Druze community for "the actions of a misguided few," affirming that Suwayda remains "an integral part of Syria, with Druze citizens as pillars of our national fabric." Recent events, he noted, proved that Suwayda’s residents overwhelmingly reject partition schemes.

Justice and Reconciliation
Al-Shara disavowed all crimes committed in or outside Suwayda, calling for accountability under the law while urging wisdom and dialogue. "Syria is no testing ground for partition, secession, or sectarian incitement," he declared, citing national unity and strong international ties as the state’s foundation.
