Dasman Diabetes" Announces Kuwait's National Genome Strategy, Published in World's Top Genetics Journal..

The Dasman Diabetes Institute, affiliated with the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS), has announced its strategic vision for Kuwait's National Genome Project, published in Nature Reviews Genetics - the world's top-ranked scientific journal in the field of genetics.

Dr. Faisal Al-Rifai, Acting Director General of the Institute, told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Tuesday that this vision adopts a unique approach different from traditional genomic projects. "It integrates genetic information with environmental and lifestyle factors, enhancing our understanding of complex diseases influenced by gene-environment interactions, particularly type 2 diabetes," he explained.

Al-Rifai emphasized the project's special significance given Kuwait's high prevalence of chronic diseases like obesity and diabetes, combined with extreme environmental conditions including exceptionally high temperatures and air pollution levels ranking among the world's highest. "This makes Kuwait a unique environment for studying gene-environment interactions," he noted.

The vision directly results from KFAS's efforts through its support of specialized workshops, conferences, and training initiatives, most notably the Precision Medicine Workshop organized in collaboration with the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, which aimed to strengthen scientific partnerships between Kuwait and the United States.

Al-Rifai highlighted the vision's emphasis on regional integration, pointing to cooperation agreements between Dasman Diabetes Institute and several sister scientific institutions in GCC countries as part of a joint pursuit of Gulf scientific leadership in genomics and precision medicine.

"We in the region have the potential to advance and lead in genomics and disease prevention," Al-Rifai stated. "This vision represents a first step toward a qualitative national project built on solid scientific and ethical foundations that will enhance preventive medicine and bring about a qualitative leap in public health in Kuwait and the region."
