Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker expressed his rejection of U.S. President Donald Trump's desire for the city of Chicago to be his next target for crime suppression by deploying National Guard troops, as was done last week in the capital, Washington.
On his account on the social media platform X on Friday evening, Pritzker said, "All people here aspire to is cheaper food, medical and nutritional assistance for low-income families, not authoritarian control over major cities."
President Trump announced yesterday that the city of Chicago could be the next destination after the capital, Washington, for security measures that may include deploying the National Guard to combat crime and other manifestations of insecurity.
Trump added in remarks to journalists that after the capital, Washington, "we will move to another location, we will make it safe, and we will make our cities very safe."
He added, "Chicago is a chaotic city with an incompetent mayor, but we will fix this situation, and perhaps this will be the next time (the next destination) we face this, and it will not be difficult at all, especially since the residents of Chicago are calling on us intensely."
About two weeks ago, Trump declared a state of security emergency in the capital, Washington, placed its police under federal government control, and deployed the National Guard to combat crime, which he said had reached record levels exceeding those recorded in the world's most notorious cities for lawlessness.
