Kuwait's Outstanding Achievements in Scientific Research Pathways... A Vital Field for Driving Development in the Country..

Kuwait is witnessing growing interest in scientific research, driven by its belief in the vital role this field plays in advancing the country's development, fostering a knowledge-based economy, nurturing national competencies, and providing innovative solutions to societal challenges.

Kuwait's commitment to promoting scientific research stems from a forward-looking vision grounded in the country's constitution, which states that education is a fundamental pillar of societal progress, guaranteed and sponsored by the state. The constitution also emphasizes the state's support for arts, literature, and scientific research.

In recent months, the country has witnessed a number of scientific achievements by government and private scientific and academic institutions, as well as by several Kuwaiti innovators who have proudly raised the nation's flag at international scientific forums and registered remarkable inventions.

  • On August 18, 2024, Kuwait University announced that the Computer Engineering Department in the College of Engineering and Petroleum won first place in the Huawei "Seeds for the Future 2024" competition held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

  • On August 27, 2024, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) announced that Kuwaiti Dr. Badriya Al-Hilali from the Institute's Energy and Building Research Center was selected to be the first Kuwaiti woman to serve as a jury member for scientific research at the Conference on Renewable and Sustainable Energy.

  • On November 12, the Sabah Al-Ahmad Center for Giftedness and Creativity (SACGC), affiliated with the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS), honored Kuwaiti inventors Dr. Khuloud Al-Najar and Dr. Sultan Al-Sharif for obtaining a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office. On January 14, 2025, the Center announced it had won the Sheikh Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah Informatics Award.

  • On November 19, 2024, SACGC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for cooperation in implementing innovation programs with the global leading innovation and entrepreneurship company "Plug and Play." On November 23, it signed an MoU with the University of California, Berkeley, to enhance international cooperation and support innovation and creativity.

  • On November 25, the Center signed an MoU in Riyadh with the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba) to support and nurture gifted students and teachers, and to develop scientific and technological activities locally and internationally.

  • On December 16, KISR announced that its Environment and Life Sciences Research Center had obtained a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for an innovative project: a vertical tuber planter and harvester device.

  • On January 29, KISR signed an MoU with the World Health Organization (WHO) office in Kuwait to enhance joint cooperation in research and development and support specialized scientific studies in public health, science, technology, and innovation. On February 1, it announced a scientific achievement by completing the breeding cycle of Cobia fish for the first time in the Middle East.

  • On the same day, Abdullah Al-Salem University signed a partnership and cooperation agreement with the leading medical education institution, King's College London, to establish the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at the university.

  • On February 24, the Kuwait Science Club announced it had been awarded two gold medals and a special prize at the Egypt International Science and Technology Fair (2025 EISTF) held in Cairo.

  • On February 28, Dr. Nawaf Al-Hajri, a faculty member at the College of Life Sciences at Kuwait University, announced he had won the 2025 Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation in the UAE, in the category of leading developmental and productive projects aimed at enhancing food and water security and sustainable development.

  • On March 5, Kuwait signed a strategic partnership agreement with Microsoft to accelerate digital transformation and establish Kuwait as a regional hub for artificial intelligence, in line with Kuwait Vision 2035.

  • On April 3, KISR announced the completion of a recent scientific study on the origin and evolution of freshwater reserves in the groundwater aquifers in the north of the country using advanced hydrochemical techniques, with support from the International Atomic Energy Agency.

  • On April 23, Kuwait University signed an agreement with KFAS to establish and operate the Kuwait National Space Research Center, aiming to develop scientific research in space technology and sciences and support research and education programs in Kuwait.

  • On May 28, KFAS launched its new strategy for the period (2025-2029) to elevate the national scientific and research system and leverage scientific research, technology, and innovation to address national challenges and achieve sustainable development in Kuwait.

  • On June 2, the Scientific Center, affiliated with KFAS, signed a partnership agreement with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) to enhance cooperation in environmental awareness, sustainable education, and community engagement.

  • On June 29, Minister of Education Eng. Sidi Jalal Al-Tabtabai announced the establishment of the "Gifted Students Office," attached to the Minister's Office, to nurture Kuwait's gifted innovators and enable them to become ambassadors of creativity at international scientific forums.

  • On July 2, KFAS signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the British Foundation to enhance joint efforts in areas including food security, education, scientific research, and the preservation of cultural and environmental heritage.

  • On August 7, Minister of Oil and Chairman of the Board of the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, Dr. Tarek El-Romi, inaugurated the Artificial Intelligence Innovation Center affiliated with Kuwait Oil Company, as part of the Corporation's digital transformation strategy in the energy sector.

  • On August 12, KISR launched the "ICARUS" system, Kuwait's first integrated national platform for high-performance computing and artificial intelligence, designed to support the scientific and research community and enhance Kuwait's presence in advanced technologies.
