Rising production costs are prompting global electronics companies to postpone manufacturing in Egypt until 2027..

Four global electronics manufacturers—Honor, Realme, Vivo, and Oppo—have postponed their plans to manufacture tablets and laptops in Egypt until 2027, instead of this year, according to three sources who spoke to Asharq News on condition of anonymity.

These sources attributed the postponement to declining demand for such devices, particularly after production costs increased by 12% to 15% due to the rising dollar exchange rate, a more than 5% increase in factory wages, and higher transportation costs following fuel price hikes.

Around 15 mobile phone brands operate in Egypt, representing various nationalities including Chinese, Korean, and Egyptian companies. These brands have a combined production capacity of 20 million devices annually, with monthly production ranging between 400,000 and 600,000 devices. (

Computer sales in Egypt account for between 500,000 and 600,000 units annually, including approximately 150,000 laptops, all of which are imported.

Other reasons for the delay in manufacturing in Egypt include the significant stagnation in the laptop and tablet market due to the pressure of rising production costs and the limited availability of these devices to certain segments of Egyptian society, according to a well-informed source.

A source told Asharq that the Chinese company Realme began marketing its tablet in 2021, but it didn't gain traction in the market. After announcing its plan to diversify its electronics manufacturing in Egypt, the company reversed course due to concerns about high production costs and weak demand in the country.
