A New Mexico court has ordered Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, to pay $567 million to fund efforts to address the harm its platforms have inflicted on children and adolescents. Judge Brian Bedshed ruled that Meta's platforms constitute a public nuisance and that the company engaged in practices detrimental to public health, safety, and well-being in the state, noting that its platforms significantly contributed to the worsening mental health crisis among minors.The judge likened the company's platforms to a factory producing pollutants, arguing that the advertisements and content displayed on them represent the products, while the pollutants are the psychological harm and sexual exploitation of children. He added that the effects of this harm are not limited to the affected users, but extend to their families, schools, hospitals, and law enforcement agencies.
