In a move that could redraw the global internet map, Meta has announced a new project called Project Waterworth, a huge submarine cable that will span 50,000 kilometers, making it the longest submarine cable in the world. The project will connect the United States, Brazil, South Africa, India and Australia, creating a giant digital route that spans the southern hemisphere.
The most notable advantage of this project is not only its length, but also the fact that it is the first submarine cable that Meta fully owns, having been involved in similar projects with other companies. According to estimates, the cost of this project may exceed $10 billion.
What's different about this cable?
Although the areas mentioned are connected by other cables, Waterworth will be the first of its kind in some respects, including as the first cable to connect Brazil and South Africa directly, which enhances direct connectivity between the two continents without the need to pass through Europe. It is also the first cable to connect India to Australia bypassing the Strait of Malacca, a strategic waterway known for its geopolitical problems and risks.
According to Meta, the project will contribute to strengthening economic cooperation, supporting inclusion and transformation.
