US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday condemned Thailand's deportation of at least tens of Uyghurs to China, considering this a "violation of its international obligations in the field of human rights."Rubio said in a press statement, "We condemn in the strongest possible terms Thailand's forcible return of at least 40 Uighurs to China, where they lack their rights to due process." He added, "As a long-standing ally of Thailand, we are concerned about this measure, which may conflict with its international obligations under the United Nations Convention against Torture and the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance."He considered that this behavior "contradicts the long-standing tradition of the Thai people in protecting the most vulnerable groups and contradicts Thailand's commitment to protecting human rights." Rubio urged all governments in countries where the Uyghurs are seeking protection not to forcibly return them to China. He called on the Chinese authorities to "provide full access to regularly verify the safety of the returning Uyghurs," while stressing the need for the Thai government to "fully and continuously verify that the Chinese authorities protect the human rights of the Uyghurs."
