Microsoft announces the shutdown of Skype service starting next May..

The American company **Microsoft** announced today, Friday, that it will shut down the **Skype** service and replace it with another free version, the **Microsoft Teams** application, which includes many essential communication features.

In a statement, the company said, "To simplify our free customer communication offerings so we can more easily adapt to customer needs, Skype will be discontinued in May 2025, and we will focus on **Microsoft Teams** as a free service."

Microsoft emphasized that "by using Teams, users can access many of the same core features available on Skype, such as one-on-one calls, group calls, messaging, and file sharing. Additionally, the Teams app offers enhanced features like hosting meetings, managing calendars, and creating and joining communities for free."

The company explained, "Hundreds of millions of people already use Teams as a hub for teamwork, helping them stay connected and engaged at work, school, and home. Over the past two years, the number of minutes users spend in meetings on Teams has quadrupled, reflecting the value it brings to daily communication and collaboration."

Microsoft added, "As we take this step, we are excited about the opportunities ahead and look forward to continuing to support people’s everyday communications."

The company noted that "communication methods have evolved significantly over the years, from instant messaging to video calls, as technology has continually changed how we connect with one another."

It highlighted that "Skype has been an integral part of shaping modern communications and supporting countless meaningful moments. We are honored to have been part of this journey."

Addressing users, the company said, "We understand that change can be difficult, and we want you to know that we are here to support you every step of the way. We are excited about the new opportunities Teams offers and are committed to helping you stay connected in new and meaningful ways."

Microsoft acquired Skype nearly 14 years ago, with the acquisition deal in 2011 valued at $8.5 billion. The app has remained one of the most important technologies for direct communication through video, whether used by individuals or businesses.
