The United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs is convening its 68th session in Vienna today, Monday, to discuss issues and challenges related to combating drugs, with the participation of the State of Kuwait.


The United Nations Information Service in Vienna stated in a press release that the five-day session will be chaired by the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, Ambassador Shimbu S. Kumaran. The session will be opened by the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Ghada Waly, who will deliver a speech reviewing the latest global developments in combating this scourge.


The statement clarified that the discussions will cover a variety of topics, including international policies, the exchange of expertise among countries, and scientific innovations in the field of drug control. Additionally, progress in implementing relevant international commitments will be reviewed.


Representatives from member states, UN entities, international governmental organizations, civil society, and the scientific community are set to participate in the discussions and dialogue sessions. The events will include more than 180 side events and 30 exhibitions covering various aspects of global drug control.


The delegation of the State of Kuwait is participating in the session, headed by Kuwait's Ambassador to Austria and its Permanent Representative to international organizations in Vienna, Talal Al-Fassam. The delegation includes Dr. Hussein Al-Shatti from the Ministry of Health, Colonel Abdullah Al-Rubaia and Lieutenant Colonel Mahdi Al-Anzi from the Ministry of Interior, as well as Third Secretary at the Permanent Mission to the UN in Vienna, Rehab Al-Farhan.
