U.S. Secretary of State Concludes Caribbean Tour Focused on Irregular Migration..

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio concluded a two-day tour of the Caribbean region, focusing on combating illegal immigration and transnational organized crime. Other topics covered included Washington's relations with the region. On the second and final day of the tour, the US Secretary of State visited Suriname and Guyana, following his visit to Jamaica on the first day."During my meeting with Suriname's President Chan Santokhi and Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin, we discussed Suriname's economic progress, regional security, and U.S. investment opportunities. We also agreed on the need for transparent elections in May 2025," Rubio said in a post on Twitter late Thursday.In a separate post on the same platform, he stated, "During my meeting with Guyana's President Irfaan Ali, we strengthened the economic and security ties between our two countries," stressing that the United States "stands with Guyana in support of its territorial integrity."Rubio said in a previous post that the trip aims to meet with "our Caribbean partners to enhance hemisphere security and combat transnational crime." He added, "We will work together to eliminate illegal immigration, violence, and smuggling in our region and hold accountable those who commit financial fraud against vulnerable Americans."Rubio began a two-day, three-country tour of the Caribbean last night—Jamaica, Guyana, and Suriname—to promote President Donald Trump's foreign policy priorities in the region.
