Dr. Amthal Al-Huwaila, Minister of Social Affairs, Family, and Childhood Affairs, discussed today, Thursday, with Dr. Heba Hagrass, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, ways to enhance cooperation in serving persons with disabilities.
Minister Al-Huwaila told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the meeting, held during the Global Disability Summit in Berlin, addressed several topics of mutual interest, including the specific challenges faced by women with disabilities.
She emphasized the need to consider factors related to gender, disability, and economic conditions that exacerbate the difficulties faced by this group.
Additionally, she noted that the meeting discussed the importance of improving the quality of services and programs provided by government entities to make them more responsive and tailored to the needs of persons with disabilities. She stressed the importance of balancing financial support with qualitative support that focuses on empowerment and encouraging their active participation in society.
The minister also highlighted that the meeting reviewed key developments in legislation and services for persons with disabilities, as well as efforts to enhance their quality of life and better ensure their rights.
Minister Al-Huwaila expressed her appreciation for the UN Special Rapporteur’s willingness to provide technical support and cooperation in training and qualifying professionals in the disability sector according to the latest international standards, as well as in reviewing relevant state reports submitted to UN committees.
She affirmed Kuwait’s commitment to strengthening cooperation and coordination with UN bodies to benefit from international expertise in this vital field.
The meeting was attended by Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights Affairs, Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Ibrahim Al-Duaij Al-Sabah.
The third Global Disability Summit began today in the German capital, Berlin, and will continue until tomorrow, Friday.
