A senior U.S. military official said on Monday that the arrival of an American aircraft carrier to South Korea this week underscores the importance of strengthening the bilateral alliance between the two countries. According to South Korea's Yonhap News Agency, the commander of Carrier Strike Group One, Admiral Michael Woosley, made these remarks during a press conference aboard the USS Carl Vinson at a major naval base in Busan.
Admiral Woosley refrained from directly commenting on reports that trilateral security cooperation among South Korea, the United States, and Japan has been negatively impacted under the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. However, he noted that the presence of the warship in Busan "demonstrates that the alliance between South Korea and the United States continues to be strengthened and strongly maintained."
Woosley stated, "Carrier Strike Group One will continue efforts toward the shared goal of peace, prosperity, and stability, reaffirming the United States' commitment to the alliance."
This marks the first arrival of a U.S. aircraft carrier to South Korea in eight months, following the USS Theodore Roosevelt's visit in June of last year, and the first such visit since Trump's inauguration on January 20. The USS Carl Vinson last visited South Korea in November 2023.
