Down Detector, which specializes in online crash monitoring, saw a sharp rise in crash reports on Monday afternoon, followed by two other, more impactful outages later in the evening.

Users reported that the platform was not working most of the time, except for brief moments during the day when it showed some responsiveness.

Elon Musk, owner of the X platform, said the malfunction was caused by a large-scale cyberattack, suggesting the attack could have been carried out by a coordinated group or a state.

Musk has not provided any evidence to support his claims, but experts have confirmed to NBC News that his hypothesis is possible.
