Turkish Trade Minister Ömer Bolat stated on Friday his country's desire to negotiate with the United States to remove the additional 10% tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump.
In a press statement from Istanbul, Bolat noted: "These tariffs are the best among the worst, considering higher rates were imposed on many other countries."
He elaborated: "We want to discuss this matter in negotiations with the U.S. Department of Commerce and its Trade Representative... especially since there's a $4.2 billion trade surplus in favor of the United States in our 2024 bilateral trade balance."
This comes after former President Trump signed what he called a "historic" executive order two days ago (Wednesday) imposing reciprocal tariffs on all countries worldwide, based on a policy of reciprocity.
During a White House address, Trump clarified that tariffs would not be uniformly applied at the same level, stating: "Each country will be treated differently."
