The Mauritanian authorities announced on Tuesday that they have received official notifications regarding the risks of rising water levels in the Senegal River.
The Wali (governor) of the Gorgol region, Mohamed El-Mokhtar Ould Abdi, told journalists that "the emergency committee met today to discuss and assess the situation resulting from the rising water level of the river in the (Kaédi) and (M'Bout) districts."
Ould Abdi added that "the meeting included a detailed presentation on the threatened villages, which had previously been damaged in past years," confirming that "we will take the necessary measures to alleviate the suffering of the population in the event of floods."
It is worth mentioning that the Senegalese authorities warned on Monday of localized floods following the rise in the water level of the Senegal River, calling on the residents of the region to "take all necessary measures to protect themselves from potential damage caused by the river flooding."
In a statement on this matter, the Senegalese Ministry of Water said that "the Senegal River exceeding the maximum alert level of 10 meters by three centimeters at the (Bakel) station, reaching 10.03 meters, will inevitably lead to flooding."
