The Personal Representative of the Egyptian President to the G20, Ambassador Ragy El-Etreby, announced that Egypt will host an official G20 meeting in Cairo from September 1 to 3, marking "an unprecedented first."
In a statement issued by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration on Saturday, El-Etreby stated that this meeting, held outside the group's member countries for the first time since its establishment in 1999, will be coordinated with the South African G20 presidency to address the growing challenges of food security and its multiple dimensions.
He added that the meeting will see the participation of a large number of G20 member states and guest countries invited under the South African presidency, along with several international organizations and financial institutions.
El-Etreby explained that the meeting will discuss the key outcomes of the G20 Working Group on Food Security, as well as negotiations on the ministerial statement regarding global food security, which is expected to be adopted during the group's ministerial meeting in South Africa on September 19, 2025. The statement will be released as one of the official documents issued at the summit scheduled to be held in Johannesburg on September 22 and 23.
He emphasized that this exceptional event crowns Egypt's "outstanding" participation as a guest country in the group's meetings for the third consecutive year and the fifth time overall. It reflects recognition of Egypt's regional weight and tangible contributions to addressing the most prominent issues on the international stage, as well as its efforts to advance multilateral negotiation tracks that consider the concerns and priorities of developing countries, particularly African nations, and amplify their voice in various international and regional forums.
